    Biography

Marjory Purdy began piano lessons at the age of four with her mother, Margaret Purdy. She later continued her studies with Helen Dahlstrom, Robin Wood, Winifred Scott Wood, and William Goldenberg. Her education includes Performer’s and Teacher’s Diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Victoria Conservatory of Music; a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Victoria; and a Master of Music Degree and Performer’s Certificate from Northern Illinois University. She also studied collaborative piano at the doctorate level with Martin Katz at the University of Michigan and participated in summer programs and masterclasses in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Currently, Marjory teaches in Coquitlam at her home studio and at Place des Arts. She loves working with all levels from the very young beginner to the advanced piano student. She also specializes in pedagogy for new and established teachers, and at Place des Arts, she mentors and supervises several student teachers. Marjory adjudicates music festivals throughout British Columbia, and she is an examiner for Conservatory Canada. As a clinician, she presents masterclasses and workshops to teachers and students on various topics, including a session at the National Convention of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association.

Marjory considers the benefits of music education immeasurable for a child’s emotional, social, and intellectual development. In her teaching, she encourages and challenges students to strive toward excellence within a kind and supportive environment. She believes all children have an artist within, and she aspires to guide students on their journey of learning and discovery.

Marjory’s students are recipients of numerous awards from local festivals, the BCRMTA, and Conservatory Canada; but what Marjory values most is helping students master the things they thought were impossible, and the privilege of sharing time with children as they grow up.

    Teaching Philosophy:

I believe that we all have music within us. As a music teacher, with over 35 years of experience working with students aged 4 to 90 from beginner to university level, I have found that with proper guidance every student is able to raise their musical literacy and technical facility. One of my missions as a mentor/guide teacher, is to harness a person’s natural musical abilities and to marry it with their aspirations to allow for personal growth and the inspiration to reach beyond expected musical goals.

I am a private piano and music theory teacher in Vancouver, and have been teaching since 2000. I teach with enthusiasm, patience, and commitment so we can encourage your child to fully appreciate the beauty of music and sound.

When teaching, my motivation is seeing students overcome new challenges in learning music, enjoying the music they play, and having fun on the piano.

I welcome beginner, intermediate, and advanced level students to my studios, and meet potential new students for an initial interview and audition. I tailor each lesson plan based on the Royal Conservatory of Music and the London College of Music curricula, the goals of the student, and/or their musical interests.

My teaching methods are centered on helping students achieve technical excellence, as well as artistic development. During lessons, I help students focus on:

    · playing with clear musical intonation and intention

    · learning to control the touch, pressure, and tone of each note

    · helping students listen to their own music to self-correct errors and recognize areas for improvement

    · emphasizing sight reading and musicianship

    · pursuing, challenging, and expanding skills to achieve the next level of technical playing

As a piano teacher, I aim to help students not only acquire a strong basic foundation for playing proficiently, but to also understand the musical elements and context of every piece they learn. Above all, I encourage students to appreciate and enjoy the music they play.
